WHAT, WHY ?I started photographing classic wooden boats some decades ago, when GBR was believed to replace wood in boatbuilding. Wooden classic boats haven't disappeared. Some few new have been built, but more important is that numerous old boats haven been saved and repaired. The public is interested in wooden boats—their glossy hulls and craftsmen´s high level handicraft skills are appreciated. Wooden boat shows and regattas are popular all over the world. In Finland wooden boat regatta in the middle of August gather together up to 200 classic wooden boats in waters around Helsinki. In Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, UK, North America wooden boat festivals have huge popularity, not to mention Tall Ship's Races. A series of new regattas was started in 2010 – the Baltic Championship for classic yachts. Two summers have now proven that there is a niche' for these events – both boat owners and public are interested in coming together, look beautiful classic boats and admire them. The planning of a register for classic boats in Finland has proceeded well – the system is expected to take effect soon. It should include also a rewarding and financial support and rewards, which reflect the valuable work done by boat owners.

MÄRKÄÄ PURJEHDUSTA - SAILING IS WET - NOW AND THEN
Muutamia kuvia tuulisilta päiviltä 2011
Some selected images of windy days 2011
Näyttely Helsingin kaupungin museossa (Aurora Karamzinin Hakasalmen huvilassa) on avoinna tammikuun 8. päivään saakka. Kannattaa käydä katsomassa kuinka purjehdus ja veneily alkoi Helsingissä !
NJK:n paviljonki Eteläsatamassa on merkittävä osa Helsingin merellistä maisemaa. "Det nya klubbhuset ansågs vara en prydnad för Helsingfors stad och Södra hamnet " (Tor Smedslund, Nyländska Jaktklubben 1861 - 1961). Kokoelmissani on muutamia kuvia NJK:n paviljongista eri aikakausilta.
The Helsinki City Museum has produced an exhibition "Out to Sea - 150 years of Sailing in Helsinki" . The initiative was the 150 years anniversary of the establishment of Nyländska Jaktklubben NJK. The NJK is one of the oldest yacht clubs in the country, and inevitably one of the most important and today also the largest one.
The exhibition will be open until 8th January 2012 at the Hakasalmi Villa ( known as the house of Aurora Karamzin).
NJK has a magnificent club house on small islands in the middle of South Harbour of the City of Helsinki. In honour of the NJK I selected some pictures of the club house representing different periods of the time.

KAKSI VANHAA VALOKUVAA - TWO OLD PHOTOS
I found two old photographs, a sailing boat and a motorboat. The images have no information. The sailboat could be Swedish or Danish, because the flag has dark base (blue or red) and light cross. Picture might have been shot on 1920's because she doesn' t have gaff rig. The town hasn't been identified.
The picture of motorboat probably dates back to 1910' s or 1920' latest.
